A Green Witch Gratitude Ritual

Most of the time, rituals often revolve around manifesting desires or seeking guidance – something with results more tangible in nature. But they don’t always have to be so outcome-focused.

This ritual is an example of one that transcends material and visible outcomes, it’s a simple gratitude ritual you can perform to thank Mother Earth. It’s still beneficial, for example its very grounding (which is great for your mental health), it clears mental fog, and it fosters a deep sense of calm, serving as a gateway to the wellspring of life.

You don’t need too much for this ritual, but it may require some preparation.

Here’s what you’ll need to prepare:

  1. A space outdoors where you feel comfortable performing this ritual. Go for a scout or discovery walk to find the perfect spot!
  2. A crystal to represent each element. Below you’ll find a short list of crystals associated with the four elements, but if you can’t find any of the crystals you own on there, a quick online search will do the trick. You can also paint the elemental symbols on rocks if you’d prefer.
  3. Ground eggshells to create a sacred space. If you don’t already have some, this is a great excuse to stock up! It’s super easy, just save your eggshells and grind them up with a mortar and pestle. Ground eggshells have the same protection properties as salt, and they don’t harm the earth.
Crystals by Element

Earth: Aventurine, Agate, Jasper, Black Obsidian, Hematite, Moldavite, Tourmaline
Air: Amethyst, Fluorite, Kyanite, Celestite, Apophyllite, Labradorite, Quartz
Fire: Carnelian, Citrine, Garnet, Sunstone, Ruby, Rhodonite, Mookaite
Water: Amazonite, Lepidolite, Aquamarine, Lapis Lazuli, Larimar, Moonstone, Selenite

Let’s get started!

First, you need to prepare your sacred space. So grab your crystals and ground eggshells, and go to your chosen area for the ritual.

Scatter the eggshells in a circle large enough for you to sit inside comfortably, then position the crystals at the cardinal points: North (fire), East (air), South (earth), and West (water).

Step inside the circle and, using the eggshells as a boundary, cast a circle with your finger. If you’re unsure how to do this you can check out this beginner’s article here.

You are now enveloped in a safe and sacred space, so sit comfortably, close your eyes, and begin to take several deep breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Do this for as long as you need to let the Earth regulate your body and align your energy.

When you feel ready, envision roots stretching from where your body meets the earth, deep into the ground and wrapping around the warm core of the earth.

Take a moment to reflect on the ways in which the earth supports and nourishes you, both physically and spiritually.

Express your thanks in words or thoughts, acknowledging specific aspects of the earth that you appreciate, such as its beauty, fertility, or resilience.

When it feels organic, open your eyes to read and recite the incantation, (or you can write your own, making it more meaningful to you):

Earth incantation:

From soil to sky, from dawn to night, you bestow me with the gift of life,

In every flower and every tree, I see your beauty and mystery.

I walk in balance, hand in hand, with all the life that shares your land.

Earth I pledge to do my part, to heal your wounds and to soothe your heart.

Take as long as you need after reciting this to feel the energies of the earth coursing through you, absorbing into your energy field.

Listen to the whispers of the wind through the trees.

Feel the pulse of Mother Earth.

Feel the blades of grass on your skin and feel your heartbeat slow as you connect with her.

Take as long as you need.

When you feel as if you’re done, thank her once more and allow your roots to gently unfurl from her core, and make their way back up to you.

Slowly bring yourself back into your body, wiggle your toes and fingers.

You can now close your circle, remembering to acknowledge and thank any magical beings who were attracted to your ritual today.

Sometimes we get so enveloped by our daily tasks that we forget just how precious our Earth is: she provides food, shelter, and water by simply existing. She is our source of life.

We forget that everything – the grass, the trees, us – is interconnected. We forget that by honouring her, we are honouring ourselves. We are deepening our spiritual practice and fostering a sense of harmony and alignment with natural cycles.

When we stop to honour her, we are walking in the steps of our ancestors and keeping magic alive.
