The Magic of Meteorites
Sometimes called Stone Arrows, lots of cultures believe meteorites to be spirits falling to earth, while others believe it to be a message from the divine. They’ve always symbolised some form of hero, oracle, omen or god.
One famous story of a stone ‘falling from the heavens’ comes from Ancient Greece, when Saturn was being quite possibly the most douchebag dad ever. If you know the story, you know he was one by one devouring his sons – yes literally eating them. His wife Rhea, cleverly seeking to protect her son Zeus, decided to hand Saturn a stone instead of the infant, which was swallowed without a flinch. Eventually Saturn’s reign came to an end and he was dethroned, and the stone came hurling down to earth. Where it landed became the temple of Apollo, and the stone is still there today.
And, have you ever heard of Star Metal? Thousands of years before the Iron Age, the Ancient Egyptians were already incorporating iron into their artefacts. This iron came from meteorites. They’re also linked to fertility – in some cultures they’re given to new mothers to protect their child, and it was a meteorite that nourished young Hercules while he was still in the womb.
