The Mother’s Wisdom

I don’t subscribe to the notion that we embody the aspects of the triple goddess in a linear phase. Recently I scrolled past a TikTok where a woman found it laughable that a 17 year old girl could claim her crone – and this just didn’t sit right with me. 

Look – we all have our own opinions. I’m not shooting this woman down, but I am going to share what I believe: we are transformative and endless. I can be my maiden, my mother, and my crone all in one day.

We filter everything through our experiences and knowledge. So perhaps most 17 year olds won’t be able to access their crone as readily as someone older, but it’s the unfortunate truth that many children are forced to find maturity and wisdom from a young age just to survive. I’ve met people much younger than myself who have floored me with their understanding of the world, and their wisdom.

I’ve also met older women who embody their maiden more than their mother or crone (hi, mum!). So I don’t believe it is a linear progression – I believe these phases are cyclical. Just like nature, women, and the moon. Why would the divine feminine archetypes be any different?

I’m not going to go into all three of them now. Today I’ve got the mother goddess on my mind. After all, summer is associated with her, so what better time to contemplate her power? 

The mother embodies fertility, abundance, and love. Her feminine power is in full bloom and she has the ability to create and nurture life. She is a symbol of motherhood, strength, and wisdom.

Now the thing about mothers is that they give. They are backbones. They are glue. And for all they give, they tend to put themselves last. A lot. This is why, when you’re embodying your mother aspect in any area of your life, you need to balance your output with your input. Never forget the importance of self-care. 

Whether you’re breathing life into projects, witchcraft, or the next generation, you need to remember you are just as important as the things you love.

But, Jade. If it’s not linear, when do I reach my mother phase?

Most of us embody our mother phase when we become mothers – it’s a magic that cannot be refuted. But this doesn’t mean that you need to be a mother to reach your mother phase. 

You are the mother goddess when you provide for or protect someone you love. When you have a strong inclination to nurture and care for others, when you sacrifice your own needs for someone else’s, you are embodying her.

You are the mother goddess when you give life to your ideas, or when you manage a project that is dear to your heart. This phase is all about creation, creativity, and productivity – it’s a time of fertile minds and manifestation.

When you draw on past experiences to guide others, you are the mother goddess. When you navigate challenges with strength and resilience, you are embodying her. 

You can tap into her by connecting with nature, community, and living life fully. She is the moon when its full, the fullness of life, and the peak of summer; she is fulfilment, in every way. 

You can also work with these goddesses to embrace the magic of the mother aspect:

Gaia. In Greek mythology, Gaia is the primordial Earth goddess, the Mother of All Life. You can connect with her by meditating with green aventurine, using oak leaves or acorns in your spellwork, and incorporating earthy green colours into your altar.

Freya. Freya is the Norse goddess of love and war, a nurturing and fierce figure that embodies aspects of femininity and fertility. You can connect with her by using rose quartz in any love magic, putting some apples on your altar, or wearing pink on a Friday. 

Isis. A powerful Egyptian goddess, Isis is associated with magic, motherhood, fertility, and protection. You can connect with her by using lapis lazuli for meditation or divination, adding a lotus to your altar or spell work, and giving your home (or outfit) a splash of royal blue.

Hera. Hera is the Queen of the Olympian gods, she is the goddess of marriage, family, and childbirth. You can connect with her by adding moonstone to your living room, bringing some peonies into the home, and using a purple altar cloth or purple altar decorations.

Lakshmi. In Hindu mythology, Lakshmi is the mother goddess of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. You can connect with her by using citrine in your spellwork, growing and caring for a lotus plant, or surrounding yourself with yellows.
